Toure of Ivory Coast dies

The younger brother of Premier League and Ivory Coast football stars Yaya and Kolo Toure died yesterday June 19th in the UK. 

Ibrahim Toure, who was also a professional footballer, was just 28 years old. 

His cause of death has not been made known but he's said to have died just hours after Ivory Coast lost 2-1 to Colombia at the World Cup.

Nigeria Military kills a wanted Boko Haram Terrorist

The Nigerian Military has announced the killing of a wanted Boko Haram terrorist in a shoot out.

The terrorist is widely known to have carried out several deadly attacks. The release by the Defence Headquarters reads thus:

“A notorious terrorist who has led serial attacks on security personnel, Mallam Husaini has died in an encounter between his group and a military convoy along Jos – Bauchi highway”.

“Husaini who leads a cell of the terrorists billed to operate in the Plateau is known to have led an attack on Headquarters, Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, in November 2012”.

Dubem Obaze reacts to Umeh's Victory

The All Progressives Grand Alliance Chieftain, Chief Dubem Obaze has described the Court of Appeal judgment, confirming Chief Victor Umeh, as the National Chairman of the Party as springboard for unity and cohesion in APGA.

APGA wins again as Onitsha South Chairman defeats opponent

The Onitsha zone of the Local Government Election Appeal Tribunal yesterday upheld the election of Chief Mrs. Ann Chukwuneke  as the chairman of Onitsha South Local Government.

Delivering his judgment in a charged atmosphere at the Onitsha High Court premises of the Tribunal, the presiding judge, Mr. Justice Vin Agbata held that the petition of the PDP candidate in the January election, Chief Sabastine Uzoeto lacked merit in the said matter as the APGA candidate, Mrs. Chukwuneke won convincingly.


Justice Agbata held that after all submissions by both lawyers of the appellant and the defendant that the whole proceedings would amount to mere academic exercise and thereby struck out the case for lack of merit.

Umeh defeats Maxi Okwu at the Appeal Court

Chief Victor Umeh has regained his mandate as the authentic National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance as the Court of Appeal, Abuja rules in his favour.

The court affirmed Umeh's position and that of Alhaji Shinkaffi.

Boko Haram: Imo Launches "Operation Know Your Neighbour"

Following the bomb incident that took place on Sunday at the Winners Chapel Church off Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, in which case three bombs were discovered and later detonated by the Police, the state Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha in collaboration with the security Chiefs in the state have come up with some security measures to ensure adequate security of lives and property in the state, with one of such measures being the launching of “Operation Know Your Neighbour” by the state Governor on Monday, June 16, 2014 at a special security meeting in Owerri, with the service chiefs in the state in attendance.

Launching the programme, Governor Okorocha contended that nobody comes into a state to commit crime of any kind without an internal collaborator, adding that since those who commit these crimes are human beings they must also be residents somewhere, and their neighbours should equally be able to know them and what they do.

Yola Airport shut against the Governor as his Impeachment moves intensify

Online reports indicate that Military have shut down Yola International Airport, preventing Nyako from taking off to Abuja this morning where he is expected to attend a meeting initiated by former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown today.
A staff at the airport told Daily Trust that the airport has been shut against all commercial and private plane based on orders from authorities in Abuja.

Breaking News... Anambra Parades 17 Criminals, Demolishes Kidnappers' Houses at Ogidi and Ojoto

The Operation Kpochapu of Governor Willie Obiano has yielded more results.

The Nigeria Police, Anambra State Command paraded 17 criminal suspects today at the State Anti-Robbery Squad Headquarters, Awkuzu.

The suspects include cultists, okada robbery specialists, plate number fraudsters, lorry thieves amongst others.

23 States to experience flooding in 2014

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has forecast that over 23 states in Nigeria would experience flooding in 2014.

Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe, who announced this on Monday at the public presentation of the 2014 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) in Abuja, said, however, that the expected flood in the country in 2014 would be less than that of 2012 and 2013.

2 Dead as Party Youths Clash

A report by the Daily Independent indicates that two persons feared dead as APC and PDP Youths clash in Kwara State.

Two people were reportedly killed in violent clashes by youths involved in defection from a political party to another in, Ilorin, Kwara State.
Many other people, including three siblings, were also injured in the clashes that began on Friday and continued on Sunday and Monday.

OAU Students Protest, lock up officers in teh Senate Building

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, are currently protesting the hike in their school fees.
The protesting students have locked down major buildings in the institution, with principal officers of the university locked up in the senate building.
“We have locked everywhere, including the senate building, computer building, and we are presently blocking the school gate. We are ready for the school management; we don’t care whatever happens to them there. The VC too is around, we want them to also feel what we are going through,” one of the protesters said.

Mass transfer of Police Officers from Anambra to Northern States causes panic

Panic has gripped policemen in Anambra State command, following ongoing massive transfer of most of the officers to the Northern part of the country, where the Boko Haram sect is involved in mindless killings.

Investigation by Vanguard showed that by yesterday about 149 officers in the command had been transferred to Sokoto, Borno, Nassarawa, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe and Adamawa states, among others.

Okocha Blames Keshi for Eagles draw

Former Super Eagles skipper, our own Jay Jay Okocha has faulted Keshi for the dismal display by the Nigerian Team against Iran.

Okocha said,

“Keshi should be held responsible for the way the team played. Before the match he said African teams are tactically not disciplined and he did not bring anything new to the table.

“His changes were poor. He took out Moses and brought in Ameobi. I think that was a wrong change.
“We saw how Osaze came in and showed a lot of creativity. That is the kind of thing we expected. Iran match would have been our strongest point but we missed it.”

Igwe fires at Rochas: "1 Million Okorocha cannot dethrone me"

The running battle between Governor Rochas Okorocha and the Chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, is far from being over, as the latter has vowed to remain in office as the traditional ruler of his Obinugwu community in spite of his purported dethronement by the governor.

Eze Cletus said:
“one million Rochas Okorochas cannot dethrone me as the traditional ruler of his community.

UniAbuja shut indefinitely

The University of Abuja has been shut indefinitely following a protest instigated by students in the two campuses.

Students were chased out of their hostels and all offices kept under lock and key.

The University has two factions of ASUU which have been at logger heads over who becomes the next Vice-Chancellor.

Army arrests over 400 Boko Haram Members in Abia State

According to Guardian reports, over 400 Boko Haram members were arrested in Abia State by the militarty:
Abia State Information Commissioner, Chief Eze Chikamnayo, who took some reporters to the military camp yesterday to see the suspects said they were arrested around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday along Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway at Arongwa area called Imo Gate, which is a boundary between Abia and Rivers states.
He said that the suspects whose ages were from 15 years were traveling on 35 buses from undisclosed northern states to the South South.  He said that they claimed to be going to search for jobs, adding that two of the buses later escaped.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State at the weekend paid off the remaining part of pensions to local government workers including teachers numbering over 600.
Obiano who performed the ceremony at Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, said on Friday that the total amount of N946,571,926.46 being paid represented  arrears of pension and gratuity from January to date.
He said henceforth he would no longer make show of such payments as he would now pay pensioners monthly so that it does not accumulate.

30-yr old Girl ganged raped, forced to drink urine

A 30-year-old Indian woman was gang-raped by at least six persons, including her estranged husband, and also forced to drink urine at a village in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district in central India.
India Today reports that the woman who was living separately from her husband, Kailash Bhil (35), for the last couple of months due to some property dispute was raped in the presence of her 10-year-old son on June 10.

I,000 APC members join PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state on Sunday lost no fewer than 1,000 members to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The defectors who were led by Ajadi Abdulfatai, were from the seven wards in Ilorin West Local Government Area.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Ajadi said they left APC because their expectations were not met.
According to him, they had joined APC because they thought there would be a lot of dividends of democracy for them

Anambra State Labour Party suspends Chairman


The Labour Party (LP), Anambra State chapter, has suspended its Chairman, Sam Osita Oraegbunam, for abuse of office and his inability to account for funds realised from the sale of nomination forms in the last election.
According to Daily Independent reports, Oraegbunam was suspended at a meeting of the State Working Committee in Awka on Saturday, convened by the State Secretary, Anthony Oraeki.
The meeting also approved the appointment of Luke Ezeanokwasa as the acting chairman and set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee to investigate the allegations against the suspended party chairman and report back to the State Executive Committee (SEC) within five days.

Alcohol and Energy Drinks A Dangerous Combo, Study Says

In a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, researchers at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan have concluded that mixing alcohol and energy drinks poses a serious public health risk, especially among college students. "We found that college students tended to drink more heavily, become more intoxicated, and have more negative drinking consequences on days they used both energy drinks and alcohol, compared to days they only used alcohol," said Megan Patrick, a research assistant professor and co-author of the study.

Boko Haram in South East: How Police foiled bomb attack at Winners Chapel

Police in Imo State have arrested six suspects over the discovery of two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) planted on the premises of the Winners Chapel in Owerri, the state capital, Dail Independent reports.
Spokesperson for the state police command, Andrew Enwerem, disclosed this on Sunday.
Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the police were alerted to strange objects at the entrance of the Port Harcourt Road branch of the church at about midnight on Saturday.
He said bomb experts were promptly drafted to the church to sweep the area.

Colombia President, Manuel Santos wins re-election

CNN reports that after a hotly contested contest, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos won re-election Sunday.

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, he had nearly 51% of the vote versus the 45% won by challenger Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, according to election officials.

A first-round vote was held last month. None of the five candidates running then received more than 50% of votes, forcing a runoff between Santos and Zuluaga.

World Cup: Angry Youths attack electricity workers in Portharcourt

Angry youths numbering over 100 stormed the corporate headquarters of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company located on Moscow Road and attacked some workers of the firm over failure to provide electricity to enable them watch the ongoing FIFA World cup going on in Brazil.


The irate youths, who also damaged some property in the company, were protesting the failure of the electricity firm to provide them power to watch the ongoing World Cup matches that began since June 12, 2014 in Brazil.

U. S. Radio Star, Dj Casey Kasem passes on at 82

According to BBC News reports, DJ Casey Kasem, best known for hosting US radio show American Top 40, has died at the age of 82, his daughter has said.
Kasem became a household name in the US after launching the nationally-syndicated show in 1970.
He also voiced cartoon character Shaggy in Scooby-Doo.
He had suffered from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia, and had recently been at the centre of a bitter family court battle over his care.

Former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, will be buried on August 28, 2014, the family has announced.

“Details about the funeral arrangements will be made available to the public in due course,” Prof. Akunyili’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, said in a statement issued today in Awka, Anambra State.

Dr. Akunyili thanked Nigerians for the great love they extended to Dora both in life and at death. He also expressed his family’s appreciation to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for the special valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in honour of Dora.

Boy kills Girlfriend after he suspected she was pregnant

Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 28-yr old man identified as Ahamehule Chukwu for the alleged murder of his 21-yr old girlfriend after he suspected that she was pregnant.

The body of the victim identified as Ifeayinwa Ani was discovered in front of the Eliozu Health Centre and reported to the Okporo Divisional Police Station by the Chief Medical Officer of the health centre, Dr. Ama Flag-Amachree, who also revealed to the policemen that she noticed three incisions, possibly made by injection syringes, on the buttocks of the deceased.
