The Labour Party (LP), Anambra State chapter, has suspended its Chairman, Sam Osita Oraegbunam, for abuse of office and his inability to account for funds realised from the sale of nomination forms in the last election.
According to Daily Independent reports, Oraegbunam was suspended at a meeting of the State Working Committee in Awka on Saturday, convened by the State Secretary, Anthony Oraeki.
The meeting also approved the appointment of Luke Ezeanokwasa as the acting chairman and set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee to investigate the allegations against the suspended party chairman and report back to the State Executive Committee (SEC) within five days.
Members of the Disciplinary Committee are Udemezue Okoye, Alex Obi Okoye, Festus Afubero, Joseph Anikpe and Nneka Egbuman, Women Leader for Anambra North.
The motion for Oraegbunam’s suspension was moved by the Deputy Chairman, Sam Okoye, and seconded by the Legal Adviser, Festus Afubero.
But in a swift reaction, Oraegbunam described his suspension as a calculated attempt by renegades to distract Anambra LP.
The embattled party boss, in a statement on Sunday, said his attention has been drawn to an attempt by some political renegades to disrupt the unity, peace and cohesion of Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party.
The statement reads in part: “This bunch of misinformed opportunists met in a hotel in Awka and purported to have suspended Engineer Sam Osita Oraegbunam from office as the state chairman of LP.
“I have decided to put this statement out to disabuse the minds of the teeming supporters and members of our great party, LP, that there is no cause for alarm especially against the background of the spurious allegation that the Chairman embezzled the sum of N250 million.
“The fact remains that the merchants of confusion, who are in hurry to cause confusion in Anambra LP, did not substantiate their allegation either by narrating how they came about the large sum of money or from where the chairman collected the money."
