Willie Obiano: 100 Days of Excellence By James Eze

Ever since former US President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt ushered in a new sense of hope to Americans who were chaffing under the weight of the Great Depression in 1933 with his New Deal to mark his first 100 Days in office, democratising societies all over the world have to come to accept the practice as a useful barometer for measuring good governance. Faced with an economy that was tottering on the verge of collapse, Roosevelt had rightly divined that America of the early 30s needed a desperate act to save it from the brink. He responded with the New Deal; a rash of fifteen acts of the parliament that brought a huge relief to his fellow Americans who were wallowing in the throes of precarious existence. The concept of marking the first 100 days with a solid proof of ability to perform took on a new meaning from Roosevelt and has remained so ever since.

We Are All Boko Haram - Femi Aribisala

From the archives: I feel it's a civic duty to share articles like this.

Read it and do the right thing... The author implies we are all Boko Haram! Read and prove yourself...

The Full Article by Femi Aribisala:

"We are Nigerians, but we hate Nigeria.  We are Nigerians, but we see nothing good in Nigeria.
I was fifteen years old when the civil war broke out in Nigeria. Although we were living in Ibadan in the South-west at the time, my sympathies were totally and unequivocally with the Igbos. When a people have been so brutally butchered by their countrymen as happened to the Igbos, I felt they had no choice but to insist on leaving the country. Therefore, I understood why the Biafrans went to war and what they were fighting for. But I could not, for the life of me, understand what those on the federal side were fighting for. Why Washington opposes Jonathan's re-election Part II

This piece by regular columnist, Odilim Basil Ewegbara deserves wider reading and comments:

In the first part, we saw how General Olusegun Obasanjo became the best friend of the US, someone Washington could count on in ensuring that US strategic oil interest in Nigeria is both protected and promoted. Singling Obasanjo out was the same way the US singled out the Shah of Iran Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who the US put in power in an Iranian military coup of 1953, which Washington and London jointly sponsored to overthrow the democratically elected nationalist prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh who nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil (BP) assets in 1951.

We also saw how Washington did everything to ensure that Obasanjo became the first president during the return of democracy in Nigeria. And to ensure that that was what happened, every odd was cleared; including the denial of Abiola’s mandate as the president of Nigeria in June 1993 by frustrating the result of that election.

 Gervinho (Cote d’Ivoire)
It may have been a bitterly disappointing World Cup for Cote d’Ivoire, but the way Gervinho stepped up to the mark as their most effective attacking player is a definite silver lining. Two goals – one of them the winning strike against Japan, the other a brilliant solo effort against Colombia – and an assist underlines his importance to the Elephants. His teammate Serge Aurier also deserves a special mention.
