Prof Dora Akunyili: Family releases funeral programme of activities

The family of former Minister of Information and Communications, late Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, has released a week-long programme of activities for her funeral, culminating in her burial on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

The programme, released yesterday in Enugu by Prof. Akunyili’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili, starts with a Christian Wake-Keep at No. 2A Bishop Onyeabor St., G.R.A. Enugu, to hold from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22.

Ugandan court overturns the new ban on homosexulity

 
Uganda's constitutional court has overturned an anti-homosexuality law that was branded draconian and "abominable" by rights groups, saying it was wrongly passed by parliament.

The law is "null and void," presiding judge Steven Kavuma told the court on Friday, saying the process had contravened the constitution, as it has been passed in parliament in December without the necessary number of legislators.

ABOMINATION: Man, 36 defiles a 9-year old girl

 
As reported by the Tribune, a 36-year-old man, Ezekiel Inuwa, who defiled a nine-year old girl (name withheld) at Gidan-Zakara in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, is currently cooling his heels at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia, the state capital.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Numan Umaru Isma’ila, who addressed newsmen, said the suspect was apprehended based on a tip-off.

Ebola outbreak is getting out of hand - WHO

 
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan met with Presidents of Guinea, Liberia and Siera Leone on Friday over the Ebola outbreak.

At the meeting held in Conakry, Guinea, Chan described the outbreak as “unprecendented and accompanied by unprecendented challenges.”

There was confusion over reports that Ghana had officially banned flights from four West African countries, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, citing concerns about the rapid spread of the Ebola virus, which has claimed over 600 lives.

An online report quoted Charles Asare, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company, as saying the measure was part of a set of emergency management plans officials were rolling out to combat the spread of the virus. 

Gov Fashola calls on Federal Government of Nigeria to close its borders

 
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has urged the Federal Government to shut down its borders with affected West African countries to prevent outbreak of Ebola virus in the country.
Fashola on Friday at Lagos House, Ikeja, said Ebola was no longer a local problem, but an international one that required urgent measures in place to prevent its spread.

Boko Haram: 40 suicide bombers sneak into Borno State

Reports indicate that at least 40 Boko Haram suicide bombers, including teenage girls have sneaked into Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria to launch attacks.

A member of the Civilian-JTF who asked not to reveal his name said a suspected sect member arrested July 27 in the city made the confession, adding that out of 40 who had arrived in Maiduguri with the intention to bomb the state capital, 2 were girls.

Witchcracft: 10-year old boy turns into a cat in Rivers

The residents of Iwofe, Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State were on Monday, thrown into confusion following the apprehension of a 10-year-old boy said to have turned into a cat to witch-hunt a family in the community.

A resident of the community who spoke to Vanguard said a cat jumped into a room from nowhere while the occupants were wide awake. The cat was said to have transformed to a boy as they were planning on how to chase out what they thought was a mere cat.

Ebola in Lagos: Govt denies envoy contact report, names the true identity of the suspected high government official

The Lagos State Government has denied reports that the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia came in contact with the Ebola Victim, Mr Sawyer who later died in Lagos.

In a statement by Mr. Hakeem Bello, Special Adviser to the Governor Babatude Fashola on Media, apologized to Mrs. Obi-Nnadozie for the inconveniences the error may have caused her as an individual and as a high official of government.

Story of Cheque-Robbery Syndicate arrested in Lagos

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos have arrested three persons who specialised in stealing bank customers cheques with which they withdraw money through alleged connivance of some banks staff.

Recovered from the suspects were two dud cheques, fake letter heads of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and that of the state’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Development which they allegedly intended to use to procure United Kingdom visa.

TRAGEDY: High-tension cable falls into a busy market, 3 killed & many injured

Tragedy struck, yesterday, at Ifo market in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State when three persons got electrocuted as a high-tension wire fell on them.

It was gathered that the high-tension cable suddenly snapped and fell on the victims. Three were said to have died on the spot, while several others sustained injuries.


REVEALED: Those who had contact with Ebola Victim in Lagos: 1 Amabassador, 3 ECOWAS Staff & 55 others

According to the Vanguard reports, the Lagos State Government disclosed, yesterday, that the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Obi Nnadozie, three staff of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and 55 others had contact with the victim of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, Patrick Sawyer, who died in Lagos, last Thursday.

The Joint Federal and State Team in collaboration with other health organisations on prevention of Ebola outbreak in Lagos, has begun monitoring of the 59 persons that had contact with the victim, who died of  Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in a private hospital in Lagos, last week.
