Read details of Jonathan's Visit to Lagos

 
President Goodluck Jonathan was in Lagos yesterday, Saturday to attend PDP South-West Unity Rally.

As a caring boss, GEJ stopped at the site of the collapsed 6-storey building belonging the Synagogue Church of All Nations to see things for himself.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Saturday in Lagos, challenged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to ensure the return of the South West geopolitical zone to mainstream political activities in Nigeria in 2015.

He said the journey has started already, thanking the people of Ekiti State for working tirelessly to return the State to PDP by electing Ayo Fayose as the governor, just as he urged members of PDP in the zone to vote massively to return other states to PDP by 2015.

Also speaking, PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’Azu expressed optimism that by 2015, the entire south-west would be back in the party’s fold, because according to him, notwithstanding that it is in the hands of the opposition, the PDP still has the largest supporters in the zone.

Jonathan said he was humbled at the party’s consensus arrangement to reserve its presidential ticket for him, adding that the action attests to the fact that democracy thrives within the party.

The PDP, he told participants at the South-West unity rally in the nation’s commercial capital, is living up to its name as a truly ‘peoples democratic party,’ and that the party’s resolve to give him the right of first refusal meant it has now become more matured.

He thanked party members for the good gesture, and promised not to disappoint.

Addressing the crowd of PDP supporters at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Jonathan expressed appreciation on the contribution of delegates from the zone to the success of the Constitutional conference at the instance of his government.

He said the commitment of the zone to the success of the confab was unquantifiable, against the background that the blueprint of the conference was offered by a man from the south-west, Senator Femi Okuronmu, while Professor Bolaji Akinyemi also aided the success as the deputy Chairman of the confab.

The rally also offered Jonathan and opportunity to list his achievements such as the construction of new rail lines across the federation, revival of the oil and gas sector, and enactment of the Local Content Law, which he said has now empowered more Nigerians doing business within the sector. He also listed success of his government in the agricultural sector, noting that the model already developed by the government in the sector has been attracting the United Nations, China and other countries.

The President also listed improvements in education, Small and Medium Scale projects, creation of more Jobs, women empowerment, encouragement of a private sector driven economy and others as part of the notable achievements his government has attained in the most recent times.

Vice President Namadi Sambo in his address eulogised efforts by President Jonathan to improve the lot of the south-west zone by citing first class projects in the zone, stressing the administration’s resolve to site two brand new power plants in Lagos as well as the construction of the Lekki Deep sea Port.

He also alluded to the sighting of a Federal University in Ekiti State, the approval of Lagos-Ibadan rail line as well as the networking of rail lines in the entire southern states as parts of the goodies the President has for the south-west zone,

Addressing the crowd, the former Deputy National Chairman of PDP south-west, Chief Olabode George who spoke on behalf of the PDP Board of Trustees Chairman said the entire people of South-were more than ready to vote massively for Jonathan in 2015.

He said the Unity Rally in Lagos was significant, marking as the first step by the PDP leaders towards re positioning the zone in political engineering, while uniting all members of the party in the south-west.

Bode George seized the opportunity to intimate President Jionathan of plans by the south-west leadership caucus about a scheduled conference of leaders of thought in the south-west zone which also include all traditional rulers to be held in October.

He said the zone could not afford to look in a different direction in 2015 given the huge projects the government of President Jonathan had cited in the zone over the past few years.


Earlier, the governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio enjoined the people of south-west to vote overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in 2015 as part of a deal for them to enjoy more dividends of democracy in Nigeria.
