N250,000
may not be a challenge to some Nigerians, who have the means, but that is the
exact amount standing between a young female school girl, Taiwo Ogunkunle and
her health.
To her parents, Peter
Ogunkunle (a carpenter) and Temitayo Ogunkunle (a weaver) of Abebi area of
Adamasingba, raising the amount is like squeezing water from the rock and this
has made them to be running from pillar to post. It was gathered that Taiwo had
a slight fall with an un-noticeable wound which she did not even report to her
mother and which later turned out to be a disease diagnosed as Chronic
Osteomylitis at the UCH. In the hospital card marked 1271700 as sighted by our
reporter, Taiwo is awaiting decortications and flap cover surgery. Perhaps, the
treatment could have been done before now, but, her parents were helpless as
they could not raise the money.
Narrating their ordeal,
Temitope, the mother of Taiwo said, “on Monday, February 3, 2014, Taiwo came
home from school without any ominous
sign. She didn’t even report any fall and did not exhibit any sign of injury
resulting from a fall. On Friday, she had high temperature. Her twin sister
called my attention to it, telling me that Taiwo had a slight fall on Monday. I
massaged the leg with hot water. There was no sore on it, but when we got to
Adeoyo General Hospital, after blood test, we were referred to MKO Abiola Way
(former Ring Road) Hospital. Before we got to Ring Road, she was complaining of
stomach pain. We had to do a scan and she was diagnosed to have kidney problem.
“On February 14, we
went to the UCH where she was attended to. She was put on oxygen, but when she
was stable, the left leg turned singed. Doctors said that the skin around the
leg had become dead. Puss started oozing out of the lower part of the leg.
Flesh on that part of the leg had to be removed through surgical operation. We
have been dressing the sore and the puss had stopped oozing out, but a flesh
protruded out of it. Later it healed up. The knee now remains to be operated on
again. The doctor said it would cost another N120,000.
“I have spent all I
have on me. I am now penniless and same for my husband. The hospital management
has given an order that my daughter would be forcefully ejected from the South
West 2 Ward of the hospital where she is currently being treated if we don’t
pay the outstanding N59, 500. I am hereby using this medium to appeal to all
well-meaning Nigerians to please assist us.
We need about N250,000
to enable Taiwo undergo the surgery and procure the several drugs prescribed”,
she lamented. A copy of the letter written by the hospital management dated
16th June, 2014 and signed by Dr. W.O. Balogun, on behalf of the Chairman,
Medical Advisory Committee and the Chief Medical Director confirmed the
situation as relayed by the distraught mother.
The hospital gave
notification that the ailing Taiwo would be ejected within 48 hours if she
could not settle the N59,500 she was already owing the management.
The letter reads:
“Notification on withdrawal of credit privilege; Please be informed that
due to demands which far outstrip available resources, management is no longer
in a position to make consumables and other facilities available on credit to
you. Her doctor has also been copied this letter, so you can jointly explore
other options of care. This decision can however be reversed if the outstanding
debt is promptly settled over the next 48 hours”.
