Many persons are anxious to have a glance at the registered voters
as certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)… For
political, social and business reasons!
To water that appetite, INEC is set to publish the register
of voters to be used in the 2015 general elections on Tuesday, January 13,
2015.
This is a milestone in the build-up to the 2015 elections
which will take place on February 14 and 28. Section 20 of the Electoral Act
2010 provides that the register of voters for an election should be published
at least 30 days before elections.
According to an INEC bulletin…
“The Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2015
General Elections,” released on January 24, 2014, under item 10, the commission
should release/publish the official register of voters for the election on
January 13, 2015.
“By the same token, the Commission shall publish the list of
nominated candidates contesting for the Presidency and National Assembly on
January 13, 2015. The list of those contesting for the offices of Governor and
House of Assembly will be published on January 27, 2015.
In the meantime, provisional figures released by the INEC
Voter Registry Department shows that by January 7, 2015, INEC had received a
total of 54,341,610 permanent voter cards (PVCs); it had distributed 38,774,219
PVCs nationwide and had a balance of 15,567,219 that are yet to be collected.
The percentage of PVCs distributed was 71.35 percent.
According to Kayode Idowu the Chief Press Secretary to the
INEC chairman, contrary to reports in the media that many people in the South
may not vote, the commission recorded about 481,298 out of the 732,166 received
while it distributed 992,310 of the 1,406,147 in Osun State.
In Abia State the commission said that it has distributed
1,020,601 out of the 1,241,257 received, for Akwa Ibom the Commission
distributed 1,468,780 of the 1,779,910 representing 80.20%. For Bayelsa the
Commission distributed 370,062 out of the 465,902 received.
