Another deportation of Nigerians from Lagos State government
as 52 suspected beggars arrive Kano State courtesy of the Eko’s policy to rid
the mega city off destitute.
Recall that such action led to a face-off between the Lagos
State government and some South Eastern states, when it has alleged that the
state dumped 67 people it termed as beggars on Onitsha, for allegedly
constituting themselves as nuisance in the State of Excellence.
Read what the Public Relations Officer of Kano State Hisba
Board, Mohammed Yola, said about the ‘deportation’:
“The street beggars were arrested by the Lagos State
government, which banned street begging and sent them back to Kano.
“The Kano State government then directed the board to return
some of them to their respective states of origin”.
They are
not deported but united with their families… Hehehe
According to the Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde
Fashola of Lagos on Information and Strategy, Lateef Raji:
“The Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso then told Governor Fashola
that he should bring them to him.
“Governor Fashola declined and said it has to be official,
hence he has to write an official letter requesting for his people, so that we
would have proper documentation and prevent the kind of experience we had in
Anambra. The Kano State government accordingly wrote.
“This is not a matter of deportation. Government has
responsibilities to their indigenes, Lagos State is stretched and yet we do all
we can to take care of them.
“If they are willing to reunite with their families and the
government is willing to take them, what stops them?
“The word ‘deportation’ is wrong; what has happened is that
they were reunited with their families and it was done in line with the express
request of the Kano State government which you can confirm from their end.”
