Biafra Is Alive? – Ayorinsola Obisanya

The civil war that lasted three years recorded

genocidal action carried out on the Igbos’ by
the opposition who was against secession.
Many died of wounds resulting from gun
shots and bomb explosion. Young ones died
of sickness and diseases that resulted from
malnutrition and poor health service. Parents
shed tears whenever their wards were
compulsorily forced to join the Biafra army
and never returned.
Children wept profusely
for the sudden disappearance of the youthful
life and the appearance of death. Home
owners were turned to forest dwellers. Up till
now, the bad memories can’t be erased- a
permanent experience. Unborn humans then
had been told the story repeatedly with
heads always shaking, sighing deeply and
hot tears run down their faces like a spring.
They wished that war didn’t happen.
Unfortunately, quarrel degenerated to war.
Before dawn of each day then, Igbos’
disappeared from the North and West.
What happened then has now turned to
theoretical topics in Government and History
taught in secondary schools and Political
Science in tertiary institutions. But to the
Easterners who saw the practical for three
years, this is more than a topic to be thought
by a teacher within forty minutes and two
hours. The practical wound has refused to
heal in spite of resolution made by both
warring parties. It becomes fresh everyday
especially to those who lost relatives and
things gotten from hard-work.
Aftermath the war, the political terrain
appeared different with no Igbo becoming the
head of state and the North having the
largest time to give decrees. To this
democratic dispensation since 1999, no Igbo
son or daughter has been elected as the
civilian president originated from this region.
This looks as if they are unwanted in Nigeria
but seriously, they are needed. They have
been supportive to candidates from other
regions.
However, supporting has not made or will
make them a fool or a region cheated and
politically rejected. They know what is right
for them in Nigerian politics but most
importantly the Republic of Biafra still stands
high in their mind till tomorrow. Have you
noticed the silence over 2015 presidential
election? Few is heard from the Igbo man
because the Yoruba proverbial son who has
no mother detest a back wound since
nobody can carefully clean it for him except
his mother. They are careful of the Nigeria
that once hunted them and stung them like
bee. They still nurse the ambition of having
that homogeneous country where everything
is ‘Igbonaized’ and ‘Igbolistic’ in nature.
Since Ojukwu lost the presidential election,
the easterners gave and still give laissez-
faire attitude to the race but are always
concerned of their five states.
These people are taking their time to study
the upheavals in the country and mount on
any leadership mistake that will actualize the
long time Biafra they always dream of. Every
Igbo man is conscious of the society he
belongs. Nigeria has not genuinely noticed
this but any time from now, the unwanted
Biafra may appear again. The fire has not
been quenched but seriously burning higher
than before.
One Nigeria.
